There's a Feeling In The Air...
Because a good friend of mine is out in Calgary right now...my thoughts have turned to the West....
I miss Calgary quite badly. I miss the mountains. I miss nature. I miss the prairies. I miss how damn friendly people are. I miss all those old folks at the Calgary Airport in their White Hats. I miss Stampede breakfast....I even miss red necks. Twice now in Toronto a group of us have produced, "The Calgary Show - An eveing of comedy with some of Toronto's finest Calgarians"...and it was packed beyond capacity with other Calgarians. In Toronto - people joke about us being sheep f*%kers (which is ridiculous because well all know it's Red Deer where that happens!)....But there is no denying that there is something special about that conservative, oil money town that keeps us all going back - and banding together here in Canada's asshole (take THAT Toronto!)
So - out of curiosity fellow Calgarians, I invite you to post some of your favorite Calgary memories, places, activities. What do you miss about it, what do you love?
I miss Loose Moose.
I miss 4th Street and the Elbow River.
( I don't miss Arty the Jester...but he's in Vancouver now.)
I miss the theatre community there, and the Auburn.
I miss the Ship and Anchor.
I miss Nellies and their breakfast burrito (my ass doesn't miss it!)
While you ponder, I leave you with these words. A song that we open every Calgary Show with:
"There's a feeling in the air,
That you can't get anywhere,
Except in Calgary.
I taste a thousand yesterdays,
And I love the magic ways
Of Calgary.
From the mountains close at hand,
I can look across the land and see you touch the sky,
From where to prairies grow
To where the sunsets glow,
We're all good neighbours passing by....
Makes no difference where I go
You're the best home town I know,
Hello Calgary, Hello Calgary....
________________________________________!!!"
I've left out the last line because it's been far too long since I had a BLOG CONTEST!!!
A FREE pint to the first person to post the CORRECT last line of this song.
(there are in fact TWO options....so, bonus points if you know both of them!)
And don't forget to post your Calgary favs....
;-)

"You know we love you!"
I don't know the alternate ending, but did you know it's a pre-packaged TV news theme, used by news stations throughout the world, since the 70s?

I look forward to the pint.
WAII!
I remembered!
"Channel Twoooo annnd Sevennn!"
Yay!
Is that two pints?
"Vancouver's Thom Marriott" is the one, and only Len Stanga! And he has won a pint for providing ONE of the possible correct answers (which I think he googled to find...)
a) shame on you for not knowing the SPECIFIC last line
b) shame on you for not emailing more
c) you stink!
d)YES - I have heard that this song has been used all over the place, with different city names plugged in...but to me is will always be "The Calgary Song"...so don't try to cheapen it that way
....
e) oh yeah...you STINK!
Come to Calgary for the wedding so I can buy you a pint...
xo
Sorry Len...your memory does NOT serve you correctly. You're close, but no second pint!
You know what else is weird...Thom is playing Toby Beltch at Stratford this season. Didn't you play that part?
I could brag about actually being in Calgary right now, with tix to go see Loose Moose (compliments of the lovely Rebecca)...but i won't. What I will do is take some pictures and bring them back to you. But I will say, you were right about the dryness. HOLY CRAP! I'm from southern Ontario...I can almost breathe underwater! Calgary makes my boogers dry up!
As for the Calgary song, I look forward to actually hearing it sung to me! For that, I'D BUY!!

Ahh if I werent painting a set I'd be off to watch some friends at loose moose tomorow evening.
Nearly every friday, though a little less in the bitter cold (we get that too) me and my artsy buddies will take the train up to 17th Ave from school and just walk it. Walk by the Ship&Anchor, Phat cafe and get some bubble tea, Western High, then the wedge and pita pit to fuel up for the journey. Hardly a day goes by where I don't appreceate my city. The rivers, the tower, the people and the life. It seems we've found the perfect mix of urbanization. Any less and to me we'd be in a goodfornothing town, any more and we're back in the asshole once again. Attending a legendary, but not ancient highscool aswell, legends can be found all over our walls. Bruce Horak's best friend taught me drama for three years in Jr. high, and Leanne Padmos for two years in the summer. There certainly is a feeling in the air. And as long as you're in Calgary, there is simply no escaping it.
Kyle G! Leanne and Richie taught you?! Good God! We're practically related!...and that's another thing I love about Calgary - there's still a bit of a small town vibe in that way - without people accidentally dating their cousins!
I'm wondering if we've met and my old brain is too foggy to make the connection?

hey Becca
not too sure if the thing posted
anywho yes this city sure has some amazing actors, and I was fortunate enough to have been taught by some of them. In fact, Bruce and Richies drama teacher in highschool is my teacher now! wowwww!!! Our play opens in a week and a half and i'm sure you know the feeling. I like it:)
You should come back home and visit you know you want tooo

I remember -
The Loose Moose Summer School.
The Fourth Street Rose (Mmmm, Ceasar salad in a jar).
Purple glass of reconciliation and shame.
Hanging out with Derek and Eric.
Stand up at Jesters.
A Portland-Oregony feel.
The Old Loose Moose in the cattle auction place.
Having donuts at Tim Horton's with Keith.
Friendly people.
Oh Calgary. You know what I miss? I miss walking innocently down the street and hearing calls of "hey nigger!", or having a friend called "nigger lover" just for being seen with me... Good times, good times.
Dagnabbit I'm too late!!! But isn't the alternate "Channel 2 & 7 loves youuuuuuu"? I'm pretty sure that that retrieving that little bit of info replaced someone's name or phone number in my brain, but DANG, what a blast from the past! How timely your post was, I just got back on Thurs. from a trip to Alberta with wee Kai...Calgary for a few days and then the Chuck for a week and a half to hang with Mom & Dad....
I miss driving west on Memorial drive at dusk when the Poplar trees are poofing their fluff, and the bridge at the corner of Memorial and 10th St., I miss the squeak of hard-packed snow under your boots, and knowing that the Mountains are in the West, and daylight till 10pm in the summer, and the promise of a Chinook Arch, I miss 17th Ave in the late 80's, the Coop coffeehouse, the Tasmanian Ballroom and the crappy old Hoopdie cars that we drive into the GROUND. I miss the lack of pretention and the very fact that there is a Hungarian/English Bi-lingual school. And Curling Rinks. And what used to be Paskapoo--any place that names something with "poo" in it MUST be good. I miss those crazy White Hats at the airport too, and the Businessmen who smell like manure that sit next to you on that bumpy flight to Vancouver. Oh, and the Sunset Drive-In! And Chicken-on-the-Way! And Chianti! Geez, clearly I could go on, but alas, I must away...I fear a poopy diaper calls. And this time it's not mine.
Huzzah for Calgary, Huzzah!!!
smoochies,
shannon
I miss how the mountains are pink and appear closer in winter. I remember using the plus 15's from the Westin all the way to the librairy without stepping outside. Remember the Devonian Gardens, the Zoo, Princess Island bike paths, and Heritage Park? What about the homeless fellow downtown who used to let out a "Heeyyoouup!" every 2 or 3 minutes?
